The Gerberich Payne Shoe Co. was founded in 1919 by Enos Snoke Gerberich. He got his start in the footwear industry working as a traveling salesman for the J. Landis Shoe Company and eventually went into his own business. He began his entrepreneurial journey first as a shoe & hat store owner in Ephrata, Pa, then as a shoe store owner in Steelton, Pa (he sold the first store to move into a larger one) then again as a shoe store owner in Trenton N.J. (this was an exclusive shoe store). While owning a shoe store he had always hoped to become a manufacturer and he got that wish as he organized with A.S. Kreider of Annville, Pa., and several others to form the Kreider Shoe Company. Finally, in the fall of 1919 he organized a company of his own, the Gerberich-Payne Shoe Company. Manufacturing began fall of 1920 and the rest is history. To read more about Enos visit findagrave.com
