Flashback 2008: Michelle Obama Wearing Narciso Rodriguez Nike Tech Challenge II Lava Inspired Dress? Check It Out

With this being an election year DeFY is taking a look 4 years back. It was election night 2008 and first lady Michelle Obama chose and eye catching dress by the very talented Narciso Rodriguez. To the non sneaker loving public it was a dress, for Agassi fans around the world it was more than that; allow me to explain. In 1989 Nike dropped a legendary tennis shoe called the Nike Tech Challenge II (still my favorite shoe of all time). They came in low top and 3/4. Aside from being endorsed by Andre Agassi and featuring plastics similar to that of the legendary Jordan IV what stood out the most was the lava print seemingly splashing up from the midsole. Some 23 years later the midsole would live on in what many would consider the most hyped up shoe of all time (the Nike Air Yeezy 2) but even that couldn’t top what showed up election night 2008. If you check out the picture above, its pretty hard to deny that this dress seems very Tech Challenge II inspired. What was even funnier for DeFY. was that in 2007 (before news even broke of a retro of the tech II) promotional t shirts were made with a similar lava print and handed out to friends and family. Take a trip back above and let us know if you think Michelle Obama’s shirt was inspired by the Tech Challenge II!
