The Uncrowned Champions? Penn State Football 1994-1995

The 1994 Penn State Football team was a force to be reckoned with. Led by one of the greatest coaches of all time (Joe Paterno aka Joe Pa), and a team that included: Kerry Collins, Ki-Jana Carter, Kyle Brady, Phil Yeboah-Kodie, Bobby Engram, and Joe Jurevicius, the Nittany Lions ended the season 12-0 and ranked behind Nebraska. If you let a Nebraska fan tell it however, they ended the season right where they belonged, number 2. You see, although both teams ended the season undefeated, Penn State was obligated to play in the Rose Bowl due to its Big Ten membership. This forced a number 2 Penn State to face the 9-3 Oregon Ducks, and a number 1 Nebraska to Face the 10-1 Miami Hurricanes (a Miami team that had a very weak schedule and lost to a 7-4 Washington earlier in the year). Penn State defeated Oregon, and Nebraska beat Miami (barely). Nonetheless, Nebraska defeated a higher ranked Miami team, and Colorado earlier in the year (A Colorado team that was led by one of the most potent offenses of the time). While the debate will go on forever (collegefootballpoll.com ranked Penn State number 1 for that year), who do you think deserved the number one ranking for 1994? Memorable Matchups: #18 Notre Dame Vs. #3 Florida Sugar Bowl 1992

When it was announced that the 3rd ranked Florida Gators were to play the 18th ranked Irish in the 1992 Sugar Bowl eyes were a rollin. To the Gators and pretty much everyone else, Notre Dame wasn’t even in the same league as the Gators (or so they thought). I have to admit, even as a life long (10 year old) Notre Dame fan, I was a little doubtful. However, I knew Notre Dame was an underachieving team capable of racking up points and thats ultimately where my faith lied. During the first half of the game the Gators led 16-7 and all was well in Gator land. This was, until, a Notre Dame defense led by Demetrius Dubose, and a offense led by Rick Mirer and Jerome Bettis, completely took over the game and went on to knock off the undefeated Gators 39 to 28.
