Known primarily for their presence in the soccer market (or as the rest of the world refers to as futbol)/football) Puma announced today the signing of the talented 23 year old New England Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez to a two year contract. The signing of Hernandez is reminiscent of when Puma signed the legendary NFL quarterback Joe Namath to a contract some 40+ years ago. DeFY. New York caught up with Aaron to talk Puma.

First and foremost I wanted to congratulate you on the partnership with Puma and thank you for taking the time out of your hectic schedule to talk with DeFY. New York

DeFY: How did this partnership come about?

Aaron: Puma contacted one of my agents and I’ve always been interested in Puma so when I was introduced with the offer of signing with them I was excited and really couldn’t have been happier. I’ve always loved their shoes, clothing…it was just the perfect fit.

DeFY: Can we expect a signature line bearing your name in the near future.

Aaron: I’m not sure about that but if that comes a long, I’d definitely be excited for that

DeFY: You sport a lot of ink and I’ve read that your tattoos have very deep meaning to you. With that said, do you think there might be a possibility down the line that maybe some of your tattoo art may work its way into the product line?

Aaron: You never know, but it will depend on how these first couple of years go.

DeFY: Or is it that the tattoos are to personal and you want to keep it something special for yourself, not really to be displayed on a shoes and apparel?

Aaron: I’m not 100%, most of my tattoos are all personal but you never know what the future brings

DeFY: Will you be involved in the design process?

Aaron: Well I’m sure they have their own designers but if they ever ask me lol trust me I’ll be sure to help

DeFY: Haha! What is it about Puma’s product that you prefer over the competition?

Aaron: Its a combination of things. First, the Puma family are great people, really down to earth and I love being around them. They have great product and especially what I need because they have the Bioweb shoe which is durable. I work on my cutting and footwork a lot and you need a durable shoe for that. They also look good and I love the way they use bright colors on all their shoes and work out clothes.

DeFY: Sneaker culture is really big and a lot of pro atheletes collect sneakers. Do you collect sneakers and if so whats your favorite pair of Puma’s in your collection and why?

Aaron: Um, I actually don’t collect sneakers, but now that I have a whole bunch of Puma gear in my closet, it looks like I collect Puma lol.

DeFY: Haha, I bet.

Aaron: But, as far as my favorite, the Bioweb in grey with green and the other with orange in it. Their super bright which I love, comfy and real sturdy. Its just a really good shoe. When your in the NFL you need a really good shoe at this level and its perfect for my training, especially the way I train.

DeFY: This partnership will go down for Puma as one of the biggest endorsements by an NFL player since Joe Namath. Do you have any Joe Namath like Super Bowl predictions for this up coming season?

Aaron: Theres no Super Bowl predictions but I know in my mind that we are trying to get there every year and we expect to get there every year; but other than that, thats it.

DeFY: Ok, well I know you’ve been inundated with questions all day and once again I appreciate you taking out some time for DeFY. New York.

Aaron: Its been a pleasure, thank you for the interview.

DeFY: Best of luck this season

Card Stories: 1992 Bowman Baseball Card Set

Screen shot 2013-03-19 at 9.07.26 PM

If you grew up anytime before the year 2000, then chances are you may have collected baseball cards at some point. More specifically, if you grew up in the late 80′s early 90′s then you know all about 92 Bowman baseball cards. Ok, 1992 you had Eric B & Rakim on the radio some good dance and house music, Hot 97 was making some big changes, maybe you were cruising on your BMX GT Performer or maybe your Mongoose. If it was winter you were sporting your favorite Starter Jacket and snap back if it was summer your favorite Champion shorts and Karl Kani t-shirt. If it was basketball season you probably couldn’t wait to get home to watch Michael Jordan heading in to MSG to play against Pat Ewing and the Knicks. Maybe you would fit in a game of Sonic or Super Mario World before the game comes on. Ok, so back to Bowman baseball cards. When these things first came out, stores couldn’t give them away. It was a huge set of cards that looked really bland outside of the gold alternative to each card. Sure, they had a UV coating and great player selection but the design of the cards was nothing to write home about. Months passed and I always remembered seeing these cards rotting on the shelves at 1 dollar a pack, that was until something happened. Word at the time (and I don’t know if this is fact or fiction) is that since stores couldn’t sell the stuff they had they were no longer ordering cases. Bowman then took all the remaining cards and burned them. If you followed Beckett back in the day, you’ll remember that these cards were like 50 cents to maybe 4 bucks before sky rocketing. After that, packs were going for 15-20 dollars and card prices went through the roof. Some 21 years later the value has since come down but thats only because baseball cards have lost a lot of their appeal, instead replaced by sneakers as the must have collectible. Still, 1992 Bowman provides for some dope photo’s to look back at and will always hold dear memories of when we spent tons of money on baseball cards and we beat the crap out of or sneakers. Stay tuned for some more card stories.

GT Performer, Aggressor, Pro Freestyle Tour and Vertigo Bicycles 1990

Screen shot 2013-02-26 at 6.42.31 PM

The 1992 BMX GT Performer was the best looking bike I’ve ever owned but it was evolution from models that came before it. Today lets take a look at the 1990 GT bikes. The mag wheels are BUTTA but some freshly polished metal spokes give them a run for the money. Go into any bike shop today and they will tell you, they just don’t make them like they used to and thats the truth (they really don’t make these bikes anymore) but they also aren’t as visually appealing. Sure, today’s bikes are built to withstand much more abuse and guys are hooking their rides up but these 80′s/early90′s gems are timeless. Not only are they pure eye candy but they hold a lot of good memories. Summer days of nothing but riding your bike for miles and miles just to stumble upon some foreign basketball/handball court and busting some @##, jumping off a curb while trying to do a 360 only to fall face down into the pavement or breaking out a bucket of water and some S.O.S. steel wool pads to shine up your spokes, yup good times (sweet times )……..Take a trip back to 1990 above!

A Struggle With Fear: Royce White, His Battle With Anxiety, And Why Everyone Should Sympathize

ap_royce_white_jef_121005_wg

Anxiety. Everyone and I mean EVERYONE will face some form of anxiety at some time in their life. You remember that shortness of breath you felt when you thought you were going to get those Yeezy 2′s at retail price for a split second only to be denied? Well, its sort of like that but not. For some it will come and go, for others its here to stay. MTV has shed light on the condition (as well as many other conditions) through halfofus.com and celebrities like:

Ricky Williams

Vinny Guadagnino

Earl Campbell

Terry Bradshaw

(all of whom DeFY. will cover separately. This doesn’t include celebrities like Jessica Alba, David Beckham and Cameron Diaz that suffer from OCD) and most recently, Royce White have made their battles public. Throw in that over 40 million American adults will suffer anxiety any given year (according to The National Institute of Mental Health) and you can see this is much more common than people think.

As far as causes go, theres a bunch. For one, Some people are just born with it. If you have a family history of anxiety then theres a good chance your genetically pre-disposed to it. Outside of that, drug use (both recreational and non recreational(prescription)), a traumatic event, life changes and many health problems can cause anxiety. The best way to deal with an anxiety disorder? Don’t go it alone. Seek a doctor first to rule out any physical causes and go from there. Un treated, this disorder can severely effect every facet of your life from your physical health to your wallet so as hard as it may seem, be pro active about getting help. Fortunately, there are all sorts of treatments to help (which will be covered at a later time) so don’t be discouraged if your suffering.

Recently, Rookie and college standout Royce White went very public with his disorder allowing the public to see very raw footage of his struggle and what it feels like for millions like him. What makes Royce’s situation especially significant to anxiety sufferers is that he’s young, he’s a professional athlete (and therefore in the national spotlight while suffering from this disorder) and he’s taking a stand against his employer over his health. If you’ve checked out any of the comments on his documentary uploaded to YouTube you will see that aside from the dumb remarks, he’s an inspiration to many. Ok, so he’s an inspiration to many for coming public, but what about the functioning aspect that so many sufferers aim for? Well, if you’ve been following Royce you will know he hasn’t suited up for an NBA game yet and was accusing the Rockets organization of not holding up to their end of the bargain for helping him cope with his anxiety while playing. Finally, as of January 23, 2013 the Rockets and Royce reached an agreement over White’s mental health care. Ok, so things are headed in the right direction or are they? During an interview with Bernard Goldberg, Bernard brings up a valuable point:
Screen shot 2013-01-27 at 3.18.53 PM

“There are people who are going to watch this and say who do you think you are? I’m fairly certain. You haven’t scored one point in the NBA, you haven’t played one game in the NBA. Who are you to tell a team what the rules are?”

It’s a great point, but Royce wouldn’t be in this situation had he not already proved himself in College so out goes that question. On the flip side of that, is this: The Rockets see potential in Royce and obviously care about him but how much should they be forced to deal with? This anxiety is a clear disability for Royce, but uder the American’s with Disabilities Act it states “If you have a disability, you must also be qualified to perform the essential functions or duties of a job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in order to be protected from job discrimination by the ADA.” Royce hasn’t played any games, so he isn’t protected right?! They should just can him! Not so quick there homey. Also under the ADA it states “An employer is required to provide a reasonable accommodation to a qualified applicant or employee with a disability unless the employer can show that the accommodation would be an undue hardship — that is, that it would require significant difficulty or expense.” It could be a little tough to argue that getting Royce the proper help and support will cause an undue hardship to a multi million dollar sports team.

Moving forward the Rockets and White have come to an agreement and will move forward from here. The Rockets are holding up to their end of the bargain and now its up to Royce. The DeFY. crew is pulling for him as should everyone else. Just remember, any day you or someone you know could become disabled. It could be mental, it could be physical. Don’t be quick to judge and get all the facts. If you haven’t already checked out Royce’s documentary then do so below. After reading this and watching the documentary make sure to vote on how you feel about Royces situation!

Remember the summer days as a kid when you would head to your local basketball court to go bust some @&%? Man, it seems like once social media blew up and everyone became a skater, pick up basketball or street ball sort of died down a little. Luckily, millions around the world keep street ball alive with NYC leading the pack. With that being said, those of you that frequent DeFY. New York know that we have actively supported two Kickstarter projects that went on to fund (Remyxx aka Re-kixx & ANI) and here we are again, this time with one of the ambassadors to street ball, the man himself mr. Bobbito Garcia & Director Kevin Couliau.

BMX Flatland Bike Tricks Ohio 1985

Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 7.28.42 PM

As much as I admired skateboarding growing up I just never got into it. Sure, I did the hop on a board and nearly bust your #$$ thing but skating just wasn’t for me. BMX, that was right up my alley (sort of). Back when I was a kid I loved riding my bike. First it was the plastic three wheel bikes (loved my three wheeled Knightrider bike)
Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 9.02.28 PM

then came my first BMX with the training wheels around 1986/1987.
Screen shot 2013-01-21 at 9.05.26 PM

The minute the training wheels came off my confidence got a liiiiiiittle to high. You see, for some reason I thought I could pull off a 360 back flip off the edge of the curb and land my bike and myself safely on the pavement (I almost made it, almost.) Maybe, just maybe if I was a smaller kid I could have pulled it off, unfortunately I wasn’t. Instead of pulling off that 360 back flip I wound up flipping backwards and landing face first into the concrete with my head breaking the fall of the bike. The end result was me being rushed to the dentist for two chipped front teeth, a busted up chin and a slight crush to the confidence. That wouldn’t be my last BMX but it was the last time I ever tried to do any crazy stunts. Anyhow, that story brings me to this BMX Flatland bike trick video. If you have ever owned a BMX bike (or sweated someone that did) hit play below.

Pony x Jack Tatum Should He Be Inducted Into The Hall Of Fame? 2002

In 2002 Pony asked the question that today is still on the minds of many. Why is Jack Tatum, a man with 3 Pro Bowls, 1 Super Bowl ring and a reputation as one of the most feared tacklers of all time not in the hall of fame? The answer might well be an incident in 1978 where a preseason hit left New England Patriots WR Darryl Stingley paralyzed. Stingley eventually passed away from his injuries in 2007 3 years before Tatum too would pass. To date he has not been inducted but with all the turmoil going on in the NFL today do you think he should have been? Check out the Wiki page for Jack Tatum, check out the hit below and vote below!
